i’m midway through watching George Carlin’s American Dream from a few years ago (2022), which i can recommend as a documentary — at least as far as i can as a longtime fan of Carlin who maybe can’t be super objective.
a few observations of various importance:
1) midway through the documentary, i texted my siblings (we have a group chat) and asked whether they, like i did, taped our parents’ George Carlin records, they did not! it’s a little wild to realize this, as i think i would credit those Carlin tapes as an early expansion of my brain beyond my house, my home.
2) going into the doc, i was only thinking about Carlin as the standup, but of course he was Rufus in in of my favorite movies, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. of course, i was reminded of Rufus in the second half of the doc, and sop it’s funny to realize i’d kinda compartmentalized Rufus from the illicit tapes i’d made of my parents’ records.
3) should i leave more voice messages? i occasionally see docs that use them, and what if i am peripherally a nice plot point for someone a documentary is about? should i be leaving more voice messages? haha
4) are these Carlin calendar graphics from his real calendar? they’re quite convincing
5) dang this doc went hard at the end. it was a real collage art piece against trump.
unrelated: i clipped all my fingernails, despite preferring longer nails. it’s not important, but i feel like sometimes the unimportant things are additive. sometimes i like a reset on my fingernails!
anyway: thanks for being here with me for a little while. take care of yourself, and take care of somebody else.
